Chemistry Olympiad

Chemistry Olympiad

The U. S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) is a multi-tiered competition among high school students aimed at stimulating and promoting excellence in chemistry.  Every year since 1984, four most competitive students nationally represent the United States team at the International Chemistry Olympiad. The Chemistry Olympiad competition consists of the following four rounds:

  • Local Section Exam
  • National Exam
  • Study Camp
  • International Chemistry Olympiad

The Midland Section of the American Chemical Society coordinates Local Section Exam and National Exam stages of the USNCO.  In March 2025, 74 students from five high schools located in four counties in mid-Michigan participated in the Local Exam.  Nine high scoring students from Bay, Isabella, Midland, and Saginaw counties took part in the National Exam on April 12th at Saginaw Valley State University.  The students who participated in the Local Section Exam were recognized with ACS certificates. The National Exam participants also received gifts at the Midland Section ACS Annual Recognition Banquet. One student with an outstanding score at the National Exam achieved the rank of High Honors.  For additional information about the Chemistry Olympiad Program in the Midland Section and to get your school involved, please contact Michael Tulchinsky at  Chemistry-Olympiad@midlandacs.org.
